Maersk to use fewer berths at Kaohsiung
MAERSK Line plans to reduce the number of berths it leases at Kaohsiung Harbour on the back of lower tonnage.
“Maersk Line rents three container berths at Kaohsiung Harbour . The lease for the No 75 berth will expire in October, but Maersk has asked to terminate it ahead of the expiry date,” an unnamed official was quoted as saying in a Deutsche Presse Agentur report in the Taipei Times.
Media reports also said that Maersk may end its lease of the other two berths at Kaohsiung Harbour , which will expire in May next year.
The carrier's Taiwan agent, Maersk Taiwan Ltd, confirmed the decision to terminate the lease for the No 75 berth, the report said.
“It is all because of slump in business,” a staff member who declined to be named said.
At present six foreign container shipping companies have leased 11 berths at Kaohsiung Harbour .
